Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said on 2026-05-04 that the state's tourism sector should remain resilient despite the Middle East conflict, as the government refines its business strategies and new hotel brands line up for investment across the state. [1]
Hajiji said the crisis will force businesses to adapt and innovate, but added that investor confidence in Sabah tourism remains strong. He said the state is preparing to position Sabah as both a holiday destination and a business hub. [1]
Among the planned hotel brands are Sheraton Kota Kinabalu, Avani, Fairfield by Marriott, Grandis at The Peninsula in Kota Kinabalu, Club Med in Kuala Penyu, InterContinental in Papar and Wyndham in Semporna. The projects are expected to add 2,740 rooms to Sabah's hotel inventory. [1]
Hajiji said the developments will create hundreds of jobs and bring more business for local suppliers, restaurants and attractions. He said the RM300 million Sheraton Kota Kinabalu hotel is also intended to showcase Sabah's culture, heritage and hospitality. [1]
The state tourism ministry plans to deepen ties with global airlines, develop higher-end tourism products, improve service standards and host more high-value events, according to Hajiji. He said these steps are aimed at strengthening Sabah's standing in both leisure and business travel. [1]
Hajiji said the new hotel projects come at the right time ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and will help prepare for Visit Sabah Year 2027. The latest major hotel opening and investment announcements came at the grand opening of Sheraton Kota Kinabalu on 2026-05-04. [1]
