RTM will stop broadcasting TV1-HD, TV2-HD and Okey on Astro’s satellite and OTT platforms from July 1, after the broadcaster and Astro failed to agree on pricing and contract terms. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
RTM said rising channel rental costs had increased its financial burden and made the arrangement unsustainable. In its circular dated May 11, RTM said: “After many years of cooperation and continuous negotiations regarding the costs and rental rates for these services, it has become difficult at this time to reach a pricing agreement and contract that meet the needs and financial capabilities of both parties.” [1, 6, 2, 4]
The state broadcaster said the partnership with Astro began in 1996 for TV1 and TV2, with Okey added in 2009. RTM also said the two companies had worked together on joint productions that benefited audiences on both platforms. [1, 6, 2, 4]
