The Malaysian Association of Travel and Tourism Agents (MATTA) is urging Malaysia to coordinate policy, funding and infrastructure to speed up electric vehicle adoption in tourism. [1]
MATTA said the shift should be treated as a systemic change that brings together energy planning, financial mechanisms, infrastructure development and tourism governance. It warned that without stronger coordination between ministries and industry players, efforts to expand EVs in tourism will stay fragmented and have limited impact. [1]
The group pointed to Norway, the European Union and China as examples of places where coordinated policy support helped accelerate EV uptake. MATTA said Malaysia already has a base to build on through the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021–2030. [1]
Nigel Wong said the issue goes beyond swapping out petrol and diesel vehicles. “This is not just about replacing petrol and diesel vehicles. It is about building a practical ecosystem that enables tourism operators to use EVs confidently, affordably and at scale,” he said. [1]
MATTA is also pressing for stronger inter-agency coordination so charging stations are deployed effectively in major tourist destinations and along highways. The association said that would help make EV travel more practical for visitors and operators across the country. [1]
