Wang Jian, a Chinese cloud computing and AI scholar and political adviser, said China has enough electricity for current AI computing needs as he discussed power supply, AI development and the US grid during the ongoing two sessions. [1]

Wang said the US power grid was "simply too outdated" and argued that much of the manufacturing for core electrical infrastructure is concentrated in China. He also said he was trying to make the point that the US is very anxious about the electricity issue, and added that AI is not owned by any single country but is a field the whole world is advancing together. He said more than two years ago that current AI models had not yet fully used the computing power already available. Wang said China’s existing electricity supply is sufficient at the current level of computing power. [1]

Wang made the comments in follow-up remarks to the Global Times on Monday after a March 9 interview and photo caption from the ongoing political gathering drew attention online. [1]

He also said that for Elon Musk to solve the electricity problem, it may be even more difficult than sending things into space, a remark that framed his broader point about the strain on US power systems. [1]
