Huawei’s HarmonyOS mobile platform ran on more than 55 million smartphones in China at the end of March 2026, as the country stepped up efforts to cut reliance on foreign technology and promote domestic software. [1]
Vice-Minister of Industry and Information Technology Ke Jixin said at a press conference on May 4 that China’s homegrown software has improved sharply in recent years. “Domestic software like operating systems and databases has been improving steadily,” Ke said, adding that users have seen “a transformative shift” in the experience compared with a few years ago, as the systems become smoother and easier to use. The figure points to a larger base for Huawei’s operating system in China, where domestic platforms are getting more traction as state policy encourages local alternatives. The government has made reducing dependence on foreign technology a priority, and HarmonyOS is among the software tools being promoted. [1]
Ke’s remarks came as officials described steady gains in China’s software and operating systems sector. The ministry said the user experience has become smoother than it was a few years ago, reflecting a broader push to strengthen local technology capacity. [1]
The latest concrete milestone is the end-March count of more than 55 million HarmonyOS phones in China, after Ke’s comments at the May 4 briefing in Beijing. [1]
