Alibaba Group Holding released Coca AI, an artificial intelligence model designed to spot early-stage colorectal cancer from computed tomography scans, the company said on Tuesday. [1]
Alibaba said the model was developed with Chinese partners including Guangdong General Hospital. The research arm Damo Academy said Coca AI found 5 previously missed cases of colorectal cancer from non-contrast CT scans of more than 27,000 people. [1]
The company said Coca AI posted a sensitivity of 86.6% and a specificity of 99.8%. Damo Academy said the model had higher sensitivity than 10 radiologists with different levels of experience and beat them by 20.4%. [1]
Alibaba said the system was more sensitive than radiologists in detecting early-stage colorectal cancer. Researchers said the tool could offer a non-invasive, cost-effective and scalable alternative to methods such as colonoscopy and CT colonography. A paper on Coca AI was published last week in the Annals of Oncology, a peer-reviewed medical journal. [1]
