The United States has announced an $11.1 billion package of arms sales to Taiwan, formally notifying Congress of eight separate sales packages. It is the largest US weapons package for Taiwan and the second under President Donald Trump’s current administration. [1]
The package includes HIMARS rocket systems, howitzers, Javelin anti-tank missiles, Altius loitering munition drones and parts for other equipment. Taiwan’s defense authorities thanked the US for the sales and said they support maintaining self-defense as well as regional peace and stability. [1]
China’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the sales and warned they risk turning Taiwan into a "powder keg" and escalating military conflict. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "It will not reverse the inevitable failure of 'Taiwan independence,' and will only push the Taiwan Strait into the danger of military conflict at a faster pace," while accusing Washington of trying to contain China by arming Taiwan. A Chinese expert said the package does not include the latest systems and argued the US is profiting financially from the sales. [1]
The US Senate also passed the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, fully funding a $1 billion Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative. [1]
