A South Korean team said animals given an experimental drug showed significant gains in motor function and less brain damage, as doctors in China expressed interest in a partnership and wanted to learn more about it. [1]

The study, published online last week in Cell Metabolism, is titled "Oxidative stress-induced astrocytic collagen biosynthesis drives glial barrier formation and neuronal death in ischemic stroke." [1]

The report describes ischemic stroke as a blockage in a cerebral blood vessel that cuts off oxygen and nutrients and kills brain cells. It says survivors often face severe aftereffects, including motor disabilities and cognitive decline. [1]

Treatment is also complicated by a narrow three-hour "golden time" window after symptoms begin for emergency care, according to the report. [1]
