Xu Kewei said nearly 4.9 million visits were made by Taiwan residents to the Chinese mainland over the past year after the mainland introduced services to facilitate cross-Straits travel. Young people accounted for more than one-third of the total, he said. [1]
Xu made the remarks at a group interview in Beijing on March 11, ahead of the closing meeting of the fourth session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee. He said peace and development remain the shared aspiration of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. [1]
Xu is a member of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC and sits on the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League. He said the rise in travel showed stronger exchanges across the straits, with younger people accounting for a large share of the visits. [1]
He also said closer exchanges between young people from Taiwan and the mainland would help build a brighter future, according to his remarks. The CPPCC closing meeting was due to take place after the interview. [1]
