Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the G20 should do more to respond to global challenges. He said that “amid rapid changes in the world not seen in a century, sluggish global economic growth and widening development deficit in the world, the G20, as the premier forum for international economic cooperation, needs to enhance solidarity and cooperation, jointly respond to challenges, improve global economic governance and contribute to world economic growth and the development and prosperity of countries.” [1]

Lin also said China supports South Africa’s G20 presidency and is ready to work with other parties under the summit theme to build consensus on multilateralism, an open world economy and development cooperation. [1]

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has cast the summit as a chance to put Africa’s and the Global South’s needs more firmly on the international development agenda. [1]

The summit opens on Saturday and runs through Sunday. [1]
