China’s top UN diplomat Fu Cong criticized the United States on Friday for sanctioning Chinese vessels and firms as Beijing took the rotating one-month presidency of the UN Security Council. [1]
Fu said China does not consider it fair to target Chinese ships or companies, telling reporters, “We don’t believe it’s fair to sanction Chinese ships or companies.” [1]
He also cast the Iran war as an example of “unilateralism, power politics and some bullying practice,” and said it was doing “heavy blows” to the rule of law in international affairs. [1]
The remarks came as sanctions and a fragile ceasefire were said to be casting a shadow over the planned Beijing summit between the leaders of the U.S. and China. [1]
Beijing’s one-month hold on the Security Council gives China the chair for council meetings and agenda setting during May. [1]
