Mayon volcano blanketed 87 villages across 3 towns with thick ash after pyroclastic flow deposits slid down its southwestern slope on Saturday evening, leaving roads in darkness and poor visibility, officials said. [1]
Phivolcs said it detected 32 volcanic earthquakes, including 25 tremors, over the weekend before May 4. [1] The agency said Mayon had no explosive eruption, but activity remained a concern as ashfall spread across the affected communities. [1]
No deaths or injuries were reported from the ashfall, but 4 water buffaloes and a cow died in Camalig town, and vegetable farms were damaged in affected areas. [1] Camalig Mayor Caloy Baldo said the ash was “just so thick” and there was “zero visibility even in our national road,” adding that “some villagers panicked but we advised them to calm down.” [1]
Clean-up operations were under way in Camalig, a town of about 8,000 people in Albay province, as residents dealt with the fallout from the ash. [1] Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said, “It’s calm again now but the danger is always there.” [1]
As of Monday, May 4, Mayon’s activity was calm, but officials said the hazard persisted around the volcano. [1]
