SpaceX and its sister company xAI have disclosed purchases totaling about $890 million from Tesla since 2023, mainly in energy storage products and electric vehicles, according to a recent IPO filing [1].
In 2024, xAI bought $191 million worth of Tesla Megapack batteries. That increased significantly in 2025, when xAI purchased $506 million worth of Megapacks while SpaceX spent approximately $131 million on Tesla Cybertrucks [1]. Between January and March 2026, SpaceX added another $34 million in Megapack purchases [2].
Based on these figures, SpaceX's Cybertruck purchases in 2025 represent about 1,183 to 1,813 units, or roughly 6 to 9 percent of Tesla's total Cybertruck sales for that year, which were reported at 20,237 vehicles [2]. SpaceX said it bought the Cybertrucks at the manufacturer's suggested retail price without bulk discounts. Morningstar equity strategist Seth Goldstein noted, "SpaceX reported buying the Cybertrucks at manufacturer's suggested retail price. He said most companies receive a discount when buying products in bulk." [2]
Goldstein added, "A company like SpaceX purchasing a large amount of work trucks and batteries for energy storage is not unusual and would be necessary for its business," adding, "If what SpaceX is buying from Tesla or vice versa is necessary for its operations, then it makes sense." [2]
Tesla and SpaceX also cooperate on developing Tesla vehicle voice-assistance features and have arrangements for Tesla advertising on the social platform X [2]. The two companies are jointly building the Terafab semiconductor manufacturing factory, underscoring their industrial collaboration [1].
The IPO filing provides a window into the close commercial ties between Elon Musk's ventures. SpaceX plans to continue working with Tesla on key energy and vehicle products as their joint projects and purchases deepen.
The filing covers purchases through early 2026 and SpaceX's buying activity for Tesla products is expected to be a continuing part of its logistics and energy strategy.
